Such a brilliant idea. If you don't know it, I recommend The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin, one of the most haunting things I read in 2021, and a great companion read to Catherine Lacey's short (excellent) novel Pew. It's online: https://learning.hccs.edu/faculty/emily.klotz/engl1302-6/readings/the-ones-who-walk-away-from-omelas-ursula-le-guin/view

This is on my list! Le Guin is a legend. Luckily I have a short memory so it will be a pleasure to read again.

I love this idea and am looking forward to following along. Here’s one you might like, Stanislaw Lem's "The Truth”: https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/the-truth-by-stanislaw-lem/ (full disclosure: i work for the MIT Press, the publisher of the recent Lem reissues)

Here are some New Zealand short stories to add to your list.

Katherine Mansfield, an absolute master of the form. My personal favourite is The Doll's House, but The Garden Party is also great. Witi Ihimaera's A Game of Cards or Big Brother Little Sister.

Anything by Patricia Grace. Airini Beautrais won the New Zealand Book Award for fiction this year for her short story collection, Bug Week.

I adore Mansfield and really appreciate you bringing other Kiwi writers in as well!

In the uk there is a magazine called popshot that comes out quarterly full of flash fiction, short stories and poetry and each release has a theme and subscribers also have access via an app. Might be a great way to find some new authors and reading material?
