Hi Everyone!
Does anyone else feel like their life is held together by ten year-old spiderwebs? Just me? Apparently spiderwebs are very strong but seeing as they disintegrate and glue themselves to me as I walk through any sort of natural landscape I disagree with that assessment and demand citations.
Since my surgery I have been holding off on working because SOMETIMES WE NEED NOT TO WORK but as a freelancer there is no such thing as PTO, so if I want to pay my rent next month I need to somehow catch up even though it hasn’t been two weeks since someone dug around in my spine with scalpel. Y’all, I am tired. But I need to get back to work, because now I have thousands of dollars in unexpected medical bills. EVEN WITH HEALTH INSURANCE.
Yay America, amiright??
Anyways, when my life falls apart I do things like start lists of words in a notebook while I am rebelliously reading books that have nothing with the book I’m writing (which is basically a waste of time as far as capitalism is concerned).
I make lists of words I don’t know, and because I moved often as a child and got a poor basic education, those words are numerous. I figured, why not look some up and share them?
While we’re at it, what is your favorite word? Tell me in the comments:
Quagmire
Appropriate! I know what Quagmire means, but mostly from Family Guy, which is a show a former boyfriend was obsessed with. Both previously mentioned shows/people are why I pretty much no longer date men (or anyone!). Anyways, wtf is a quagmire?
If you’ve seen The Neverending Story you’ll recognize this. It’s a soft boggy area that gives way underfoot, which is also the literal definition quagmire. So is the current state of abortion rights in the United States, thanks to MEN and A FEW WOMEN and MOSTLY WHITE PEOPLE.
Another definition of quagmire? “An awkward, complex, or hazardous situation.”
For example: I am currently navigating the quagmire of information and forms required for entrance to my doctoral program in creative writing. (Seriously, why in god’s name are there so many PORTALS and why do none of them take me to a napping place).
Carapace
I thought this was a part of a house but it’s actually kind of the house itself? It’s “something regarded as a protective or defensive covering,” or “the hard upper shell of a turtle, crustacean or arachnid.”
Don’t get it twisted though. Carapace is not a shell! A carapace is made of bone. This means that turtles don’t technically have shells. Now you have some ammunition for the next time some dude tries to explain something about turtles to you.
