Hello All,
Thanks for letting me rest. I promise, I have some wonderful things in store, including a couple opportunities for community writing spaces this summer.
In a week I’ll be starting the (hopefully last??) revision on my book, which I’ve been working on since selling via proposal in 2019. That’s a long time. I’m, ready to be done, but I’m also excited to revise after hearing from some beta readers.
A Note: Folks who have yearly subscriptions to this newsletter have full access to this class, as well as discounts on all other classes I’ll be offering (more coming soon).
Living Inside the Short Story
Saturday June 17th via Zoom (11am-1pm EST)
The short story has a natural structure, often formed loosely during the first draft. The structure is a kind of dwelling which contains every word, sentence, paragraph, scene, character, and moment. Each dwelling can be wildly different: some float on clouds; others are scattered across fields and oceans, connected by the past and present of what once existed and what may exist. Some stories are composed of plastic siding and predictable stuffings, but when a writer allows themselves freedom during the first draft they can be surprised by the flexibility and shape of their story’s dwelling.

From June 3rd-17th we’ll be looking at some short stories, excerpts, and reading thoughts (both my own and those of other writers) on story writing.
All paying subscribers will receive the story newsletters preceding the class, but only registered participants can come to the class itself.
You do NOT have to be a fiction writer in order to benefit from this class! As someone who received my MFA in fiction and is now a PhD candidate in nonfiction, I promise that both genres (all genres!) exist symbiotically.
The class is 3 hours, split between generative writing time, instruction, and seminar-style learning (i.e. discussion). You can expect to finish off with one, two, or several small story starts, or even a half or full draft, depending on your level of engagement the prior two weeks.
I signed up, but I didn’t have a Venmo account. It will take a couple of days for Venmo to validate my bank account.
